Facebook Ad 2: A Girl is Missing

I'm not sure what it is about Facebook that lends itself to such strange, open-ended ads that really make no sense.

A Girl is Missing, alright, what's this going to be: perhaps an exciting new facebook game; an action/adventure movie, or perhaps even a new book? All the possibilities in the world open up, yet as I continue reading...

Surpass your Philosophy professor. Hmmm, so perhaps a philosophy book or course?

Existentialism is now American. While I'm not entire sure of the truth of this statement, perhaps it is a exisentialist book or course, still making sense at this point.

How many thoughts to find your Freedom? To Free us All? An interesting question is posed, perhaps 42, 77, or the square root of -1. Although, not really much to do with existentialism.

On Sale Now! (if only I knew what was being sold to me)

I'm not sure what happened to the girl, how my thoughts will set us all free, what the picture has to do with anything, or what is being sold to me. However, the ad is quite good:

Haikus never EVER get old

What was i thinking?
1.21 gigawatts?
WE NEED SOME LIGHTNING!

Tokyo is boring
Maybe i'll destroy britain.
oh look, the army

this is a haiku
there are seven syllables
in the second line

And then god, he said:
I would like to tell you all,
VELOCIRAPTORS

I wander these dark halls
To myself, i contemplate
Where is the TARDIS?

Looking around me
Test tubes full of mutagens
I could be super

Peter piped picked
a peck of pickled peppers.
but why should i care?

..Rick is Lime? In 3-D..

I saw your wall post today
It could only be described as gay
I stared with contempt
Profanities did tempt
But I died from radioactive decay

Is it just me, or is Pokemon horrifying?

What looks like a fantastic game is actually just a sadistic horror fest. Seriously, you know its true.

Lets take a look at some other things here.

  • Teens go out and search for Pokemon to capture and keep for themselves without a license
  • Teens going out without adult supervision
  • Capturing and storage of endangered spieces
  • Storage of Pokemon in containers significantly smaller than creature
  • Unlawful battling of Pokemon until one them is incapacitated. This fighting will continue until all of a trainer's Pokemon are knocked out
  • No police force to be seen. Thieves are everywhere
  • Monopolization of health centers and general stores (unless of course they are owned by the government)
  • Human cloning
  • Children can gamble
Don't get me wrong, I love the Pokemon games, but this is just too hilarious to not write about

What is a "Facebook Stalker"?

Facebook stalker seems to be a commonly used word these days. And yet, like many neologisms, it doesn't really have any meaning. Merriam-Webster Law Dictionary defines stalking as the following: "the act or crime of willfully and repeatedly following or harassing another person in circumstances that would cause a reasonable person to fear injury or death esp. because of express or implied threats". However, this doesn't seem to be the common use of the word in Facebook stalker. While certainly one could harass another on Facebook, it seems to be of another nature. A Facebook stalker is often depicted as someone who browses a person's information, pictures, etc. despite not having a relationship with said person. This would seem to be related to another neologism, a creeper.

Collins Dictionary defines creep as the following: "
a person considered to be obnoxious or servile." And thus we come to the heart of the matter: a Facebook stalking is not an act one can universally do, you must be considered obnoxious by the receiver. However, isn't that the nature of harassment? How the harassee perceives the action? And yet, this is quite different, as it involves not the nature of the act but the nature of the actor. If person A were to think of person B neutrally, non-obnoxious that is, viewing person A's information, pictures, etc. would not be considered Facebook stalking. However, the inverse is thus true.

I feel obligated to post something

here ya go

Facebook Ad 1: A Wii in your Facebook?

I stared at the advert for a second, pondering. A Wii in my Facebook? How could this be? How could an advert ask me such an open-ended question without actually giving me an answer? Could a Nintento Wii gaming device actually exist in my Facebook? If it could, would I even want one? How could a physical entity exist in an intangible idea?

What is the nature of Facebook anyway? Simply a place where ideas can congregate and whore themselves off to other ideas; propagating idea upon idea. Ideas that nobody wants, left in the cold, to wither and die. Yet still existing on the "cloud". Not that we could even spot it anyway. It used to be so simple, a text file on a computer, an image file on a computer. Now what is it? Can we even attempt to traverse the abstraction and touch The Real? An idea, submitted, thrown half-way across the world into a series of tubes, splintering into millions of pieces to be scattered across more tubes upon tubes upon tubes upon tubes. What good does it do to even attempt to traverse The Real? What good would it do us, to think the unthinkable?

Why am I writing this post?

Chiptune just blows my mind

The album art to one of their newest singles: Aurora

As many of you may know, The chiptune scene has finally started to come out in full force. Even big bands such as Devo have started to use it in their newest album (which is awesome by the way). However, straight up chiptune is still very uncommon and after listening to the stylings of Anamanaguchi, I'm seriously starting to wonder why.
Anamanaguchi is a chiptune band from New York City that makes "Loud, fast music with a hacked NES from 1985". Using only sounds created by the NES' sound card, they have repeatedly made musical masterpieces such as Fast Turtle and Power Supply. Anamanaguchi employs live electric guitar, bass and drums on top of said synthesized music to create a fusion of digital and traditional sounds. The bands lead song writer Peter Berkman has stated that their inspiration comes not from video games, but more so from bands such as Weezer and the Beach boys.

After the release of their EP, Power Supply, Anamanaguchi has moved on to much bigger things. So far they've had one full length album, Dawn Metropolis, and have appeared in the Wiiware videogame Bit.Trip Runner. More recently, They have been hired to create the music to the Scott Pilgrim -vs- The World video game which was released in August of this year

Anamanaguchi performing live. The hacked NES is visible on the right
side of the picture.
Now on to the music itself! Normally when one thinks of chiptune, they think of the horrible choppy sounds from the classic games of the 80's. Anamanaguchi just blows that stereotype to smithereens. With beautiful harmonies, fantastic melodies and mind numbing combinations of solid guitars and chiptune sounds, Anamaguchi sets the bar really freaking high for other chiptune bands.
There really isn't much else to say though because words simply cant describe how geeky and amazing it is

Now get out there and listen to this band. You WILL NOT regret it

Bananas are so much better now

From our friends at Wikipedia

A banana equivalent dose is a concept occasionally used by nuclear proponents[1][2] to place in scale the dangers of radiation by comparing exposures to the radiation generated by a common banana.
Many foods are naturally radioactive, and bananas are particularly so, due to the radioactive potassium-40 they contain. The banana equivalent dose is the radiation exposure received by eating a single banana. Radiation leaks from nuclear plants are often measured in extraordinarily small units (the picocurie, a millionth of a millionth of a curie, is typical). By comparing the exposure from these events to a banana equivalent dose, a more realistic assessment of the actual risk can sometimes be obtained.
The average radiologic profile of bananas is 3520 picocuries per kg, or roughly 520 picocuries per 150g banana.[3] The equivalent dose for 365 bananas (one per day for a year) is 3.6millirems (36 μSv).
Bananas are radioactive enough to regularly cause false alarms on radiation sensors used to detect possible illegal smuggling of nuclear material at US ports.[4]
Another way to consider the concept is by comparing the risk from radiation-induced cancer to that from cancer from other sources. For instance, a radiation exposure of 10mrems (10,000,000 picorems) increases your risk of death by about one in one million -- the same risk as eating 40 tablespoons of peanut butter, or of smoking 1.4 cigarettes.[5]

I want to eat more bananas.

also, someone calculate how many bananas it would take to kill you. im too lazy

Fricken huge amounts of aliens

So today for English we had to write two short stories, each one paragraph long. To be honest, I had a good time.

Story #1

Ben was new on the squad and frankly, nobody really liked him. All of this hate was rightly placed though as a nerdy science wiz on a team of battle-hardened super soldiers is bound to make a commotion. About a week before Ben showed up the team leader had decided that every squad needs its own “science officer” to inform the squad about the aliens and their technology but all the soldiers really needed to know was “fire at their head and don’t die”. Four days after Ben was recruited, squad 452 got caught in an ambush – and it was an intense one to boot. Most of the squad found cover by some wrecked cruisers but a few unlucky souls got caught outside and mowed down by the alien’s plasma rifles in a horrific scene that could only be described as a massacre. Ben was cut off from the rest of the group; caught behind a large bus that had been shot down earlier. He could hear the footsteps of the approaching battalion crashing upon the road like the fire oceans of Orthage. Myriads of alien drones marched their way forward like a line of ants on way towards their hill. Or was it a plethora? Ben knew myriad was a large number but was unsure if plethora would have been bore accurate. About ten seconds into his horrible self-conflict, he was vaporized by what his comrades called a “frickin’ huge amount of aliens”.

Story #2 (not completely original)
It was three years ago, in a dark corner of Philadelphia. I was born there and raised there too and as a result had come to like the area quite a bit. Of course, I was the top dog on my playground. In fact, much of my childhood was spent there! However, like all neighborhoods in a city, it had to go bad at some point. One family of bad kids moved in and several followed and eventually it felt like the whole place was just one big prison with no guards. I couldn’t just let these kids take my spot as top dog though! I fought and fought them until one day I came home with a broken hand. My mom was furious. She told me that I had to go move in with my cousins! I was on the plane to their house for hours fuming about my current situation. Eventually I came to the realization that this might not be so bad after all, I could just gain status as top dog there just as easily as I did in Phili. Nothing could possibly go wrong here. When I got to their house, I quickly paid the taxi driver and ran inside. I was ready to take my place as head honcho in my new home

I have beautiful writing skills i know

First post! Hooray! (still trying to figure out what to write about. Dang)

Yeah. Not much is coming from this. Writers block is just freaking awesome isn’t it? I’m amazed that with all of the things going on in the world and in my life that I can’t think of what to write about. I mean seriously, I’ve watched about 8 hours of TED videos in the past week. Good times. Good times….
